Clark Material Handling Company has company roots that date to 1917 in Buchanan, Michigan, in the U.S., when the Clark Equipment Company built the Tructractor, the world’s first internal-combustion-powered industrial truck.

Clark’s History, From Tructractors To Modern Forklifts

The Tructractor’s original purpose was to haul materials between company departments. Its popularity with factory visitors led Clark to build 75 units in 1919. That same year, Clark Equipment Company launched the Clark Tructractor Company, from which Clark Material Handling descends.

In 1922, Clark released the Truclift, the first IC lift truck to use hydraulics rather than mechanical gears and linkage to lift a load. Two years later, Clark equipped an optional tiering attachment to its Duat tow tractor, forming the world’s first IC forklift truck. In 1927, the Clarktor tow tractor became the first industrial truck or tractor to include an electric self-starter as standard equipment.

Introduced in 1928, the Tructier was the world’s first IC forklift to use hydraulics instead of chains and cables to lift a load. With the TW15/20 introduced in 1967, Clark released the first electric 3-wheel lift truck in the U.S. In 1991, Clark became the first lift truck maker to offer a factory-installed compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel option.

Clark IC cushion tyre forklifts include C-, CGC-, and S-series models with LPG and dual-fuel power options with 3,000- to 15,000-lb (6,803-kg) lift capacities.

The forklifts are designed for comfort, safety, productivity, and durability with a Smart Dash display that provides access to onboard diagnostics and speed limit control, automatic applied parking braking, and other functionalities. Operators also benefit from adjustable full-suspension seats, fatigue-reducing fingertip operation of electronic directional controls, a small-diameter steering wheel requiring low steering effort, and more.

Clark Electric Forklifts

Clark produces electric forklifts in GEX-, SE-, and SEC-series models and a TWLi20 model. The latter provides dual-joystick controls, a wide-view mast, a high operator seat position, and a tight turn radius, all of which help to make the machine a good option for working indoors and in narrow aisles.

GEX models have a low centre of gravity, curve cutback, and wide stance for reliable, stable performance. GEX 20 and 25 variants can accommodate a 54-kilowatt-hour battery, while the GEX 30 and 32 variants can equip a 60-kWh battery and the GEX 40, 45, and 50 variants have a 72-kWh battery.

SE-series models are available in 11 configurations and 36- and 48-volt options. SEC-series forklifts, which provide the same voltage options, include operational features such as three selectable performance modes and a turtle mode.
