Read More (About Gallagher)Gallagher Engineering is a notable Australian designer and manufacturer of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment and vertical drilling rigs. Its trenchless drilling technology has been used for underground cable and pipelaying for the utilities, communications, and oil and gas industries.
Gallagher builds its products in its factory in Labrador, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, including the design stage, fabrication, finish application, and final assembly.
Gallagher Engineering has developed and manufactured drills with 9.1 to 300 tonnes (20,000 to 660,000 pounds) of pulling power. Its product line includes the HDD 660, HDD 660 Multi, and HDD 200/400. To prevent breakoffs and other mishaps, all Gallagher drills allow their pressures to be preset in all relevant areas.
With up to 300 t of thrust and pullback, the HDD 660 drill replaced Gallagher’s popular HDD 600 model. The more capable HDD 660 is powered by a Cummins diesel engine that generates approximately 800 horsepower (600 kilowatts). The drill has a rack-and-pinion top head drive and a maximum carriage speed of 30.5 metres (100 feet) per minute.
A utilities contractor reported that its Gallagher HDD 660 can drill farther than 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles), depending on the pipe diameter and ground conditions. The customer bought its HDD 660 to install large-diameter water mains in Sydney.
For smaller to midlevel jobs, the Gallagher HDD 200 often fills the bill with a Maxi-Rig drilling machine and a 600-HP (450-kW) Cummins engine. Gallagher says one of the HDD 200’s strengths is in situations where a physically small infrastructure crossing makes open drilling necessary.
Another advantage is that its thrust and pullback capacity can be upgraded from 90 t (200,000 lbs) to 180 t (400,000 lbs), so an HDD 200 owner can take on larger projects in future. Gallagher says this transformation from an HDD 200 into an HDD 400 can be completed in a week.
Besides HDD and vertical drills, Gallagher also manufactures mud cleaning devices that filter silt and debris from drilling fluid.
Richard Gallagher, a qualified fitter and machinist with an engineering certification, founded Gallagher Engineering in 1994. The family-owned and -operated business also performs custom fabrication not far from a Gallagher waste recovery company.
