McIntosh Farm Machinery is a division of McIntosh Brothers, a family-owned and -operated company founded in 1951 by brothers Bill and Bryant McIntosh in Palmerston North. McIntosh is known for its trademark blue sileage wagons.
McIntosh Titan Silage Wagon
The farm equipment business develops and manufactures machines used for harvest, hay and forage work, and vineyard applications on operations in New Zealand, Australia, and South America. McIntosh Farm Machinery, which claims to have offered one of the first silage wagons for the New Zealand market, also provides reconditioning and modification services for older farm machines, does press brake work, and offers general engineering services.
McIntosh Brothers also owns McIntosh Cranes, a provider of mobile crane, truck transport, and related hire services across the Manawatū-Whanganui region. As of 2023, Bill’s son, Brett McIntosh, was the general manager of McIntosh Farm Machinery and McIntosh Cranes.
McIntosh Brothers History
The McIntosh brothers started their company by offering equipment repairs in a shed in a Palmerston North back section. After establishing a workshop in the 1960s near the North Island Main Trunk, they began producing a line of Buzzacott sheep showers. During the 1960s, the company started manufacturing stock crates for trucks, which led to the production of cranes for trucks. This in turn led to crane hire becoming a key segment of the brothers’ business.
In the 1970s, the brothers demonstrated a forage wagon at the National Agricultural Fieldays trade show; the wagon proved extremely popular with farmers and resulted in numerous feeder wagon innovations and developments from the company over the decades. Continued success through the 2000s necessitated an expansion to a larger facility in Palmerston North in 2008.
McIntosh Farm Machinery Products
McIntosh farm equipment includes single-, double-, and multi-bale feeders and manure spreaders available in 7.5-, 10.8-, and 13.5-cubic-metre (9.8-, 14-, and 17.6-cubic-yard) capacities built to spread cow, pig, and chicken manure and waste.
The company also produces tip trailers for hauling dirt, metal, silage, maize, and farm equipment. The trailers are available with customisations to meet buyers’ exact needs. The manufacturer’s farm wagons include chaser models for transporting silage and maize, beater wagons that feature three PTO-driven horizontal beaters, and vineyard wagons for applying straw and light-material compost on vine rows.
As of this writing, McIntosh Farm Machinery offered nearly a dozen Multicrop and Titan Silage Wagon models ranging from 7.8 to 27.2 cu m (10.2 to 35.5 cu yds) in capacity, in single- and tandem-axle configurations with two to four floor chains. The wagons boast a narrow body design that McIntosh says is ideal for pad work but still provides stability on rolling terrain.
