There’s a lot to consider when looking at lawn mowers for sale. Blades, deck quality, operator comfort and controls, and engine type are all important factors, but you’ll often first need to decide among the different types of mowers available. The size of the area being mowed and its terrain are the biggest factors in that decision. Riding, stand-on, walk-behind, and zero-turn are the four most popular options when comparing new and used lawn mowers for sale.

Riding. As the name suggests, with a riding lawn mower, the operator will ride on a seat and control the mower. Some riding lawn mowers look like small tractors and, as a result, are called lawn tractors. John Deere, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, Toro, and Simplicity are among the more popular makers of riding lawn mowers for sale.

Stand-On. With a stand-on mower, the operator has a small platform to ride on and operate the mower, with the mower deck in front. A stand-on mower typically offers better visibility and reduced operator vibration compared to a riding lawn mower. A stand-on mower is often best for smaller areas, slopes, and highly landscaped areas where easy maneuverability in tight spots is important. You’ll find stand-on mowers for sale from John Deere, Ferris, Exmark, Wright, Toro, and other manufacturers.

Walk-Behind. Walk-behind mowers typically work best in smaller areas and are among the least expensive and lightest-weight mowers available. These mowers can either be push mowers, requiring the operator to move the mower forward, or self-propelled mowers, where the operator only needs to guide the mower. Cub Cadet, John Deere, Honda, Snapper, and Toro are among the leading manufacturers offering walk-behind mowers for sale.

Zero-Turn. When you have large, wide-open spaces to mow, a zero-turn lawn mower is ideal. These commercial-type mowers, also called ZTR mowers, or zero-turn radius mowers, have front wheels that can pivot quickly allowing you to more easily move around obstacles. Zero-turn mowers have two levers, rather than a steering wheel, for navigation and have faster forward speeds than most riding lawn mowers. Manufacturers offering zero-turn mowers for sale include Exmark, Ferris, Grasshopper, Hustler, John Deere, Kubota, Scag, Toro, and Woods.
