Caterpillar’s 335 Next Generation Excavator Brings More Digging Power, Less Downtime
Caterpillar’s new 335 Next Generation medium hydraulic excavator has a zero-maintenance exhaust aftertreatment system and a very compact tail swing radius that enables it to work in close quarters. The new machine achieves up to 10% better fuel economy and 45% more performance than the 335F prior model, Cat says, and it costs up to 20% less to maintain. It also comes standard with Cat Grade with 2D, Grade Assist, the Cat Payload on-board weighing system, and the Lift Assist overload alert feature.
Powerful Hydraulics
The heart of the 79,900-pound (36,200-kilogram) Cat 335 is a 273-horsepower (204-kilowatt) Cat C7.1 engine. It can start up at a temperature of 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius), or as low as -25 degrees F (-32 degrees C) with an optional cold start package. The engine can also operate at temps as high as 126 degrees F (52 degrees C) and at altitudes of up to 15,090 feet (4,600 meters). It has a one-touch idle setting and an on-demand hydraulic fan.
The Cat 335’s new hydraulic pump produces 20% more power, yielding a 15% increase in bucket and stick force. The system also has a new electro-hydraulic main control valve. There are auxiliary hydraulic options for various Cat attachments, which can be tagged and located via Bluetooth. The excavator features a maximum digging depth of 22 feet, 11 inches (7 meters), a maximum ground level reach of 34 ft, 11 in (10.64 m), and a maximum loading height of 26 ft, 1 in (7.96 m). Options include SmartBoom, which lets the boom travel freely without consuming hydraulic power and fuel, and lowering check valves to keep the boom and stick elevated when hydraulic flow stops.
Cat has extended the change intervals for the 335’s engine oil and filter (1,000 hours), new air intake filter with precleaner (1,000 hours), and hydraulic oil and filter (3,000 hours).
An Outstanding View
Inside the Cat 335’s new, high-visibility cab designs are a tip-up console, automatic climate control, and joysticks with savable pattern and response settings. An 8-inch touchscreen monitor comes standard, as do rearview and right side-view cameras. Options include an automatically adjustable heated and cooled seat, a 360-degree camera system, and a 10-inch display.
