When there’s a tough brush-cutting job ahead of you, Caterpillar has the right tool for the job. Its 299D2 XHP Land Management compact track loader specializes in difficult mulching and land-clearing tasks.

The purpose-built machine is set up to run industrial brush-cutters and other hydro-mechanical attachments. In order to function in dense vegetation, it wears a number of debris shields and deflectors, and it uses a turbine-type pre-cleaner that eliminates foreign matter before it reaches the air filter. At the same time, an optional reversing fan blows twigs and leaves away from the intake screens with both automatic- and momentary-purge modes of operation.

Moreover, Cat expanded the Land Management version’s fuel tank by 80% to provide an all-day run time of 11 to 12 hours.

    Mechanicals & Hydraulics

This edition of the 299D2 XHP has an operating weight of 12,752 pounds (5,784 kilograms). It’s powered by a Cat C3.8 engine rated at 110 gross horsepower (82 kilowatts). On a clear stretch, the loader can attain a travel speed of up to 8.3 mph (13.4 km/h).

The 299D2 XHP’s frame and undercarriage can move up and down independently of each other thanks to a torsion axle-style suspension. This reduces shock and vibration to the operator and frame alike on uneven terrain.

To run hydro-mechanical attachments with enough power to clear swaths of vegetation, the 299D2 XHP has a high-flow, high-pressure auxiliary hydraulic system (40 gallons per minute at 4,061 psi, or 151 liters per minute at 28,000 kilopascals).

The Cat 299D2 XHP Land Management comes with a two-year machine standard warranty in the United States and Canada. (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)
    Comfort & Control

Inside the 299D2 XHP’s pressurized cab is a high-end, heated seat with air suspension. You can adjust its armrests and joysticks independently to find the best comfort level. Two-speed travel comes standard, as does an electronic hand dial and foot throttle setup with a decelerator pedal.

There’s a rearview camera for visibility and safety, and a 5-inch LCD display to help you run attachments and adjust drive characteristics. Also onboard is a theft-deterrent system and an available Bluetooth-compatible radio with a microphone.
