Komatsu recently introduced a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)-free variant of its PC138US-11 midsize excavator, giving customers another option within the PC138US-11 range to suit their specific operational needs. The new PC138US-11 Non Tier 4 version maintains the same digging, lifting, and hydraulic performance as the standard PC138US-11 model, according to Komatsu, while eliminating the need for selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

    Benefits Of A Non-Tier 4 Design

According to Komatsu, the PC138US-11 Non Tier 4 is well-suited for civil construction, utilities, and general earthmoving applications. The company says it introduced the excavator in response to customer demand for a midsize excavator that offers greater flexibility to meet specific jobsite requirements and operational preferences.

By removing the SCR system and eliminating the need for DEF components such as AdBlue, customers may benefit from lower operating costs and reduced handling, maintenance, and monitoring both onsite and remotely. These reductions relate to the removal of DEF storage and handling requirements, as well as the electronic sensors, filters, and injectors typically utilised in SCR-equipped machines.

    A Short-Tail-Swing Design

Despite the change in emissions configuration, the PC138US-11 Non Tier 4 retains the same core design and operating characteristics as the standard model. These include a short-tail-swing design that allows the excavator to work efficiently in confined spaces such as urban projects, residential construction, and roadworks. Komatsu says the excavator’s rounded cab and sliding door enable the cab to swing within the same radius as the counterweight for true tight-tail performance.

The excavator is powered by a 4-cylinder, variable-flow turbocharged Komatsu SAA4D95LE-7 engine rated for 97.2 net horsepower (72.5 kilowatts) at 2,050 rpm. A temperature-controlled viscous fan clutch, combined with efficiencies in the engine and closed-centre load-sensing hydraulic system, delivers up to a 9% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous power plant, says Komatsu.
