MCM Construction Invests In Electric Equipment From JCB

Posted On: Tuesday, 12 July 2022

Isle of Wight-based MCM Construction recently added a JCB 19C-1E mini excavator, a 1TE site dumper, and a 525-60E Loadall telehandler to its fleet, bringing its total complement of electric JCB machines to six. (Photo courtesy of JCB.)

MCM Construction recently made a big move towards electrifying its operations with the acquisition of three new electric JCB machines, thereby doubling its complement of electric JCB machines. The Isle of Wright-based firm previously had a Loadall, an electric dumper, and a power pack for quick charging; the new order included a JCB 19C-1E mini excavator, a 1TE site dumper, and a 525-60E Loadall. MCM says it will use its bolstered electric fleet on school, hospital, and prison projects on the island. Each of the machines can complete a typical full day’s operation with a single charge.

“We’ve used JCB equipment for years and always had good service so turned to them again for this purchase,” says MCM Construction Director Brendan McMahon. “As a company, we need to look towards the future and electric is the way to go. We already have a number of JCB electric machines and are investing in electric hand tools, too. We have bought the electric variant of every machine JCB offers, and the machines have proven perfect for our projects in sensitive areas.”

    The 19C-1E Electric Compact Excavator

The electric compact excavator has four battery packs to allow five hours of standard application. Operators can monitor the battery status with a gauge on the instrument panel, and can recharge the machine using either a 110-volt, a 230-volt, or a 415-volt charger. The 19C-1E produces 10 dB less noise than the diesel version, allowing it to operate later in the day and in areas with strict noise regulations. The three single-flanged bottom rollers are allied with short pitch tracks for smooth, quiet operation. The excavator has a maximum dig depth and dump height of 2.82 metres (9 feet 3 inches).

    The 1TE Electric Site Dumper

The electric dumper has a payload of 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) and a battery capacity of 10 kilowatt-hours. The 1TE’s output of 7 kilowatts continuous and 20 kW peak power is equal to that of a 1-tonne diesel dumper. The dumper’s compact design allows it to work in confined spaces; its zero emissions and low noise levels allow it to operate in noise-sensitive areas and even indoors. The dumper is powered by two 48-volt 5-kWh lithium-ion batteries capable of doing a full day’s work.

    The 525-60E Loadall Electric Telehandler

The 525-60E Loadall telehandler has a maximum lift capacity of 2,500 kg (5,500 lbs), a maximum lift height of 6 metres (19.7 feet), and a battery capacity of 24 kWh. For maximum productivity, the telehandler has constant four-wheel drive and three steering modes. Low noise levels and zero emissions allow operation at times and in places that previously would not have been possible.
